What are the ingredients in homemade Turtle Ice Cream?
The ingredients for Turtle Ice Cream are very basic.
To make Turtle Ice Cream in an electric ice cream maker, you will need:
- Eggs – Yes, this Turtle Ice Cream recipe uses eggs, but I have eaten a ton of it and never had a problem.
- Sugar – No surprise that you need the tempting sweetness of sugar.
- Heavy cream – The heavy cream is what gives this luscious ice cream it’s texture.
- Whole milk – Adding whole milk helps keep the mixture light enough so that air can mix and keep the ice cream from freezing like a rock.
- Vanilla extract – The base of this ice cream is actually vanilla.
- Turtle Bites, unwrapped and cut into quarters – If you cannot find the small bite-size pieces, larger Turtle candies will work if cut into pieces.
- Fudge sauce – I personally love Hershey’s Hot Fudge Topping. Since the Hershey’s is a little thick for this recipe, I used Smuckers. You can use your favorite store-bought or homemade.
- Caramel syrup – Since I picked up a jar of Smuckers Hot Fudge, I wanted the matching set.
- Toasted pecans – If you are feeling a little lazy, you can buy the toasted or roasted pecans. The salt actually adds more complexity to the flavor. If you have more time,
Making Turtle Ice Cream in an Ice Cream Machine
Turtle ice cream maker in an electric machine is super easy to make.
First, use an electric mixer to beat the eggs until they are light and foamy, which takes about a minute. Then, slowly add the sugar and keep mixing until everything is well blended. Next, pour in the cream, milk, and vanilla, and mix until it’s all combined.
Pour this mixture into your ice cream maker and freeze it according to the machine’s instructions. In my Cuisinart Ice Cream 2 quart machine, the Turtle Ice Cream takes approximately 30 minutes to freeze into soft serve.
Just before the ice cream is fully set, add half of the chopped Turtle candies.
Transfer half of the ice cream to a freezer-safe container. Add half of the fudge sauce, caramel sauce, and pecans on top. Then, add the remaining ice cream to the container and top with the rest of the fudge sauce, caramel sauce, and pecans.
Cover the container and freeze it for 4 to 6 hours until it’s nice and firm.
Make 1 quart liquid and about 1 ½ quart frozen.
